HARINAS ELIZONDO

Technological transformation and energy efficiency at Elizondo Flour

Services: Lighting Control, Fire Detection and CCTV

The Elizondo Flour Factory is a flour processing plant consisting of a 14-story mill with packaging areas, silos, workshops, lanterns, by-product, warehouse and offices.

This project was developed from the ground up in collaboration with Lutron and the luminaire manufacturer to create a luminaire that met the client's dimming, color temperature, and brightness requirements. We relied entirely on Lutron technology and components, including occupancy sensors, light sensors, EcoSystem panels, power supplies, and QSM equipment, as well as the EcoSystem and QS protocols.

Some of these areas have double-height ceilings due to the type of machinery required for proper product processing. Furthermore, each zone has specific and independent lighting requirements, taking advantage of natural light. Therefore, based on the available information, the lighting design had to be carefully considered to determine the appropriate equipment. Additionally, the lighting components had to be adapted to a 100% airtight enclosure, as the product is very thin and could damage the electronic components.

One of the main challenges was the cable lengths, which were generally very long and exceeded the maximum limit for the communication bus recommended by Lutron. Additionally, it had to be taken into account that some machines vibrate a lot and trigger the presence sensors within the plant. However, the most significant challenge was the implementation timeline, given that everything was done during a recession caused by the pandemic, which impacted transportation, health protocols, personnel numbers, and access.

The requirement was to maintain a color temperature of 6500°K to perceive the true color of the flour and easily detect impurities. Additionally, a brightness of 500 lux was required on all surfaces and/or work areas, along with maximizing the use of natural sunlight during the day, as production could extend into night shifts depending on demand. The instruction is that when the plant is completely closed, the light level should be reduced to 0%, while if production is underway and no workers are present, it should be maintained at 10%.

An EcoSystem was implemented, achieving independence from specific lamps and zones, and incorporating presence and daylight sensors. Additionally, an RS-232 interface was implemented to allow interaction with other plant systems.

With the installation of the systems, especially the lighting control, the Los Reyes plant became the most modern in the entire Elizondo family, as it not only allows for the proper performance and quality control of the product, but has also generated significant electricity savings that directly benefit the environment.

We also install CCTV and fire detection systems with meticulous design and detailed planning to meet all requirements. We select the equipment type, technology, location, and quantity of components, taking into account the distance between devices to ensure coverage for all three systems.
